Remembering January 20, 2000

There are certain dates that will always stick in your mind. For me, one of those dates is January 20, 2000. On that day the boys and I were making our daily trek into school and work. The day changed drastically in a split second. I lost control on black ice, crossed the centre line and was hit by an oncoming car. My worst nightmare was about to begin.

My son, Matthew, in the front passenger seat was critically injured and his life hung in the balance for several weeks. He had a ruptured pulmonary artery, the same injury as Lady Diana, and was fighting for his life. We spent 4 months together in hospital and rehabilitation and the rest of the year at home recovering.

The accident taught me many things - the importance of family first and foremost, the strength of character that my sons had at such a young age, the art of forgiveness, and that no matter what your faith, someone is always looking out for us, especially when we screw up!!!

I always hug my boys a little tighter when we say so long, and make sure they know how much I love them, always tell my family and friends how much they mean to me, and above all else that famiy is always first in my life.
